I called to schedule oil change as I hit 3k miles but the dealer said not necessary and 5000 is good.
5,000 is perfectly fine. I bought mine in July and with our high heat I felt more comfortable doing the first change at 3,000 miles. Plus I had 3 free oil changes from the dealer and luckily I have a good one so I took advantage of them.

That's how it works. An algorithm monitors your driving style and calculates when an oil change is needed, OR you have reached 10K miles, OR 1 year since last service, whichever comes first. I get mine change every 5 - 6k regardless.
An algorithm?

It's a simple time/mileage equation. 10k miles, or a year. There is no actual oil life monitor in our trucks.

Breathe Easy, Ford Tells You When You Need an Oil Change

Ford vehicles come equipped with an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor system (IOLM) which will display a message on the dash at the proper oil change service interval.

I know they call it an "intelligent oil life monitor."

But there is nothing magical or intelligent about it. It does not take driving conditions or anything else into play. It ONLY monitors time and mileage.

Did you watch the video? It says it takes towing and off road conditions and takes that into account and calculates the mileage for changes based on that. So it's more than just time and mileage.

I know what it says. But it is not true. No matter the driving conditions its set to 10k miles or one year. All highway, mixed city, towing miles or offroad miles, it doesn't matter. You can check for yourself.

Can you explain to me just how the truck knows it's offroad, or towing for that matter?

It's a very smart truck till it gets below 0 degrees, it goes bat shit crazy.
Luckily I'll never find that out here. I can tell you it still works good at 117. ?

It knows if a trailer is attached. It knows if you are in 4WD and which one. It senses load on the motor. It even knows what tilt angles the truck is in. Combine that with speed and gear, what more does it need?

I went to 4787 before my first oil change. I would have made it 5k but I was driving home to MT from Yuma and didn't want to go over 5k. I had a tad bit of fuel in the oil, the level was a little over the top notch. I normally check the level of all our cars every 1k miles, and change and rotate every 5k.

Drive time. My oil life percentage plummeted when I starting doing exclusively short trips.

Oh and kudos to anyone rotating tires in the garage with jack stands every oil change. I might do it once every few years lol.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
Used one of those lube express oil change places on a trip, as I exited the lube lane the oil filter blew off and sprayed oil everywhere.... they used the wrong size filter. Next time I wait until I can get home and do it myself.
*Note* I should have specified that this was NOT on my Ranger :)
