I'm bored with the stock Hankook tires, and I'm ready to upgrade. I've got the FX/4 package with 18" wheels, no lift, no leveling kit, just the stock FX/4. I'm looking at increasing the tire size from the stock 265/60-18 to 265/65-18, because, why not? It's the same width as stock and about an inch bigger in height. My top 2 tire contenders are the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T and the Falken WildPeak A/T4W. For the WildPeak I'm looking at the SL load range, not the heavier E1 load range. It has a load index of 114 and weighs about 47 lbs. The Baja Boss has a load index of 116 and weighs 46 lbs. I live in Central/Southern California and there is a huge variety of driving here from snowy mountain passes to sharp rocks in the desert, sand, washboard gravel, etc. Probably not too much mud, but who knows?. Of course, most of my driving is on pavement, but I want to be able to say yes to most of the off-road adventure options around here.

In the size I'm getting, the WildPeaks don't have the new "3-ply DURASPEC" sidewall, so I think maybe the Baja Boss will have a stronger sidewall. But otherwise, on paper, these tires look pretty similar.

Anybody have experience with the new A/T 4 Wildpeaks or the MT Baja Boss and want to share your opinion? Thanks!

No rubbing with that size? Any spacers or other mods?
No rubbing. I do have Eibach coilovers set at about one inch of lift.

The tires are about 1 1/2" taller but 1/2" inch narrower so I think that probably helps.

I have no experience with the AT4W but, I had the AT3W and they were a good tire. They were on the heavy side for their size and I didn't have the LT either. I do have the Baja Boss A/T (also not LT) on my old ranger. They are a very aggressive AT tire. When I got home and saw them in the yard after delivery, I thought for a second that I was sent MTs by mistake. They have a little hum but ride very good.

Hum is not a bad thing IMHO

We have similar situations and I have been doing some research as well. I have not been let down in the past by the Goodyear DuraTrac. Did you roll those thru your equation? I have also been contemplating adding an inch underneath and going even larger for 265 70 R18. But weight was an issue for thought.

I did consider the DuraTrac. It would be a good tried and true choice, but I decided to look at newer tires. I think the industry has perhaps improved the compounds and the technology in the last few years.

With the 265/65-18 size you can put the same size tire on the 17" spare wheel with a 265/70-17 tire. They're both 10.4" wide and 31.6" high.

Went with the Baja Boss to replace my OEM Hankook AT's. Still rides great on-road, but a big boost in performance off-road....Significantly better off-road in fact, yet it's still an AT tire.

They are about as lightweight as I could find for a slightly bigger wheel - 44lbs. They look very beefy in person. 265/70/17. I also replaced my OEM 18" wheels with 17's to keep the weight down and a bit more poke 55mm to 18mm. The 17's only weigh 26.75lbs, so my "hit" total was only about 5-7 lbs. My recommendation is that if you don't offroad, stick with an AT that is more on-road oriented. I wanted to improve off-road performance, but still keep at AT. They delivered in spades for my needs and I now have a much stronger sidewall. They really enhanced the look of my Ranger

I should add that lots of Tacoma guys run the Baja Boss.

I have the new AT4W but I really like the look of the MT. They don't make them in the size I wanted so I went with the Falken. No complaints so far.

Yeah, I went back and forth so many times I can't keep track for which tires and wheels I would end up with. It's interesting, all the Tacoma guys run the Baja Boss's, but very few Ranger guys run them I've found. I'm certain the top 5 tire brands that most run will work for 99% of drivers. For the street, I loved the OEM Hankooks. They were just ok in loose dirt, but worked.

I recently got the MT Baja Boss 275/65R18 and love them, we've had a little snow and they did great besides a some trails and a HUGE improvement over the OEM Hankooks. Now I'm looking into getting different rims but not sure the offset.
