An M4 bolt is too small - it'll not have anything to bite into. If you don't want to put a nutsert in, or install a nut on the back side, you'd have to do at least an M5, probably an M6 and possibly slightly drill out the holes... and they'd only have 1 or 2 threads holding in the thin metal. Might work fine though.
The bolt and washers are to use instead of buying a tool. Once you have used that stuff <<<<< to crimp the nutsert then you can use the M4 fasteners of your choice to hold the flap.

Call me lazy, but honestly, I don't want to have take 5 or 6 bolts out (and keep track of) simply to change the oil/filter. I found a way of not having to remove the pan when draining the oil, and I intend to do the same with the filter.

I have a clear practical plan that I intend to execute that will allow me to easily access the filter, and then just as easily / accurately replace the flap and securely hold it perfectly in place. Pieces arrive in today by mail - should not take long to test it out.

Best of all it is a cheap fix, I'm out ~$10 if it doesn't work out.

My confidence level is high...

Yep, 2022 XLT Tremor, I just went outside and took a picture of the driver side, and I am missing a bolt............................

I have a 2022 XLT, purchased new, all services performed by myself. I also have only got 3 bolts in the same positions.

Ford cost cutting?????
Probably more like the employee at the plant just used whatever he/she had in their pocket at the time your Ranger came across the production line......

Ya they probably ran out of plastic clips and used the proper bolts but the bolts cost more so back to the plastic!!

My 2023 also came with the three bolts, sad thing is I have had three oil changes done at a ford dealership and only the first oil change did they loosen those three bolts. The other two oil changes, they popped the plastic connectors off the bottom of the flap and lost the plastic connectors both times. There's a big difference in the training the lube techs get compared to the real mechanics in the dealership shop. I resigned my self to buying a bag of those plastic connectors, as I have no confidence they will do it right in the future.

OK, as promised, here's my solution for easily removing.reinstalling the fender/engine flap (or whatever official name the thing is called).

I still must remove part of it as usual, and I took the magnet idea a step further (Kudos to Canadian Ranger for his idea). Cost was still~$10-$15 ( I was targeting $10 but cost me $12.80 with tax, and I am short 1 magnet. Counted 8 but the 9th one was hiding from me. I really don't need to use it as I never fully remove the flap, but I am OCD enough to want uniformity.

Anyway I ordered these magnets from Amazon. They come in black but I didn't want to pay $20.99 + tax for them.

I sandwiched the parts as such.

Beveled side of washer facing out, flap, and magnet ring side (beveled hole) facing the frame. I then inserted the wood screw through it all. I then cut some small diameter hose black hose I had laying around in my hose bin, in 1/2" lengths. I tightened the beveled wood screws onto the hose hose to hold it all together. The hose fits the diameter of the smallest frame holes perfectly. The hose was intentionally cut 1/8" longer than the screw to act as a guide when installing the flap. It also insures the flap won't be moving around any under any abnormal adverse conditions, (high winds or water).

Here's a couple of picture showing both sides of the flap (minus the one that is going in tomorrow when the order arrives), Already tested and it goes off and on easy enough, with plenty of staying power.

Inexpensive and effective... and it will keep me from fussing with those ^%&$ fasteners and searching for the one that I drop everytime I change the filter!

And while I'm ranting... (about those plastic fasteners)

Why is "everywhere", "everyday", and "everybody" considered correct grammar/spelling, but not "everytime". I know that it is supposed to be "every time", but I feel like bucking the trend today.... so I'm spelling it "EVERYTIME" today!

Well I ordered the 150 lb black magnets as it seems you guys have had good luck with magnets. I also had issues with those plastic buggars falling and had a hard time finding them. Thanks to all you pioneers in figuring this out.

Now if I can figure out the proper placement of my oil drain pan as I seem to miss each time!!!

Impossible not to remember as they are attached to the liner. There is nothing to install. I simply line up the hole and the magnet does the rest, guided my the hose threaded on the screw. See the picture.

The hose (stud) correctly positions the liner and then inhibits lateral movement. The top is the beveled washer and screw, The underside is the magnet facing outward towards the frame, the screw is tightened onto the hose which holds everything together, and the hose fits perfectly in the frame hole.

These are all great DIY fixes. My question is, if I don't do my own oil changes, am I at risk of the dealer tech getting lazy and not putting all the clips back properly? Or do they just reach up from underneath when it's on the lift?
