Should I be worried about the metal on my differential drain plug?

Changed it today. 65k miles. It hasn't been making any noise or anything like that, just trying to be overly diligent about maintenance. I know shavings are common but I don't think these qualify as shavings. They're light gauge almost like it's some sort of baffle or something. Oil looked pretty good otherwise.

I figure if it ain't making any noise I'd just keep rolling but I'm a little worried.

Thanks in advance.

Yea, at bare minimum I'd pull the cover off and have a good look, that aint normal and isn't just leftover machining bits.

No transmission issues? I see your concern… seeing those would clench my cheeks too…
Is your trans skipping any gears? No jerking or hesitating shifting?… even slightly rougher than before like to any degree?

someone activate the airlinetech signal ??

ctechbob I agree with you, definitely worth having to replace the fluid just to investigate further.

someone posted a video of a young guy who had a 10r80 open and he was showing one of the little plunger deally in the maze of channels (no I don’t know the actual terminology I’m sorry.) that breaks or gets stuck… but I also think thems look like cog teeth that have been sheared off… so maybe it’s the older drum (the cdf drum is it?.) that gets replaces with the TSB for the transmission..I wanna say has teeth on it..could those end up in the pan if they were to be sheared off?.

I agree with @ctechbob , I would definitely pull the cover and take a peek. I must say that I like the item you used for size comparison.

If you have an extended warranty I would hesitate before I pulled the cover and messed with it, but that looks horrible!!!
Do you have a rear locker in that truck?

I second that motion, hopefully you have coverage still.

I was wondering how the Coors cap made it out the drain hole

Keep an eye on your wheel speed sensors. Mine was similar and I didn’t take it to ford early enough. Had to get the rear passenger side axle replaced.

No transmission issues. This was in the rear differential.

maybe, they don't look like they're shaped right to be a part of that, though. Wouldn't it be making god awful noises if it were a bearing? I drove it about 800 miles from Friday-Sunday with no issues. Changed rear dif oil when I got home yesterday evening. Drove it 43 miles to work this morning with no issues.
