playing with my camera while doing some exploring ranch roads and county roads. The clouds and wintery brown seemed like a pic worthy moment. same spot later in the year will be green as can be. Lonely fireplace / chimney still standing. the rest of the home is long gone. not even a rut or path around it any more. Abbs in whats left of Dark Corner Texas. Just the graveyard is about all thats left. Historical marker mentions that men from Mexican American war, Civil War, WW1, and WW2 are resting there.

Have you tried long leaf pine over there for over the winter greenery?

Looking at the map the area/soil looks like a pine country. But closest example I could find on the map was some 100 miles to east.

Could it be that the pines in the area have been cut down in the past and then grazed to death with cows?

If pine would grow there I see great opportunities for wood farming.

Edit: Well the U.S. Geological Survey had the answer to that question. The soil there is alkaline, so no pines for you :) You could plant them, but most likely with poor results. Would need a lot of sulfur to get it to grow naturally.

I have not but I might thanks for the idea. Some pines in the area but sparse. Most of the area is oaks and brush. Plus lots of cattle grazing

As noted on the edit above, it seems that the soil is alkaline. The single trees probably sit in pockets of lower PH areas. So a soil PH meter might be a good buy if you plant few of em... Aim for a PH 4-6 :)

Sunset on Virginia Key in the heart of Miami. It is generally not this quiet there. More so in the winter.

I used to bike the trails on Virginia key, by the waste water plant.

Really pretty pocket of nature in that madhouse. 😂

I did find these though, they are from out in Big Cypress, Monument Lake area.

They were taken free hand using night mode so they are not the clearest photos. . .

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Florida. when it was peaceful, it really was peaceful. . .

The below picture was taken on Loop Rd, in Everglades national park. I do not recommend doing this in a regular sedan. it is doable, I saw sports cars do it, but the potholes are crazy and get deep out there. It is a slow but beautiful drive. A great place to spot wildlife - birds and fishes. not many mammals that I ever spotted out there. The history of the area is pretty rich too, they say that the mobsters from Miami would come out there and gamble and just raise hell during prohibition. And that doesn't even begin to talk about the cocaine era.
